In addition to the inventory of WWF for the Aegean islands who defined 11 sites on Samothraki (Catsadorakis and Paragamian, 2007),  15 wetlands in total and 12 micro-wetlands (< 2000 m²) were delineated. We are currently applying an assessment matrix to review the conservation status of the major wetland sites and will continue exploration to identify all micro-wetlands in the future. Recording of fish and bird populations has also begun for the first time in these wetlands. Several wetland sites along the coast have been severely degraded by anthropogenic pressures such as water abstraction and tourism activities. Future research will focus on aquatic biodiversity inventory, conservation management and restoration issues
